“When asked to make a statue for a children’s park in San Juan, I thought who better to portray than Juan Bobo, the island’s Simple Simon, protagonist of many folk tales of silliness. I particularly liked the one in which his mother sends him to the river with a bucket to fetch water; he decides to use a basket instead because it’s much bigger. So,violating all of my serious rules of sober form - with children there’s no need for restraint, only joy - I made a fountain with a happy, galumphing Juan Bobo.”
